New High School Rule Regarding Goggles
The NFHS has recently changed the rule requiring goggle usage in high school field hockey for the upcoming 2020 fall season. ASTM-approved goggles are no longer required but may be worn. For the complete statement, click here.
Stanford University Cuts Field Hockey Program Beginning in 2021
Citing financial difficulties, Stanford University has announced plans to cut 11 varsity sports, including field hockey, beginning with the 2021-2022 school year. Only three universities in California play varsity field hockey; the vast majority of collegiate field hockey teams are located in the eastern half of the country. For the announcement, click here.
Conferences That Have Cancelled/Postponed Fall Sports Season
The list of colleges/conferences that have cancelled or postponed their fall season keeps growing. As of 7/29/20, the following conferences have postponed or cancelled:
America East, Atlantic 10, Atlantic East, Capital, Centennial, Colonial States, Commonwealth Coast, Empire 8, Great Northeast, Ivy League, Liberty, Little East, Massachusetts State Collegiate, Middle Atlantic, New England Collegiate, New England Small College (NESCAC), New England Women's and Men's (NEWMAC), North Coast, Northeast 10, Northeastern, Patriot League, Pennsylvania State, Southern, and SUNY.
Several conferences have announced a delay in the fall start date including:Mid-American, Old Dominion, and South Atlantic. The ACC, Big 10, and Big East Conferences have announced conference only play. The Colonial Athletic Conference is leaving the decision up to individual schools but so far, only James Madison has indicated that they will try to have a season. The others have all cancelled/postponed their season.
